Digital Imaging

What's going on inside your teeth?

A large part of understanding you and your family’s complete oral health is examining what’s going on inside your teeth and below the gums. Paloma Dental uses digital imaging, which involves extremely low dose digital x-rays and transillumination techniques to give a more objective diagnosis with cavities. Digital imaging aids Dr. Bassett and her staff in diagnosing and treating the full spectrum of dental conditions quickly, effectively, and safely.

How are digital x-rays safer?

Digital x-rays, which are part of Dr. Bassett’s routine exams, expose the patient to significantly less radiation compared to older versions and negligible amounts compared to other medical x-rays done. Digital imaging is also better for the environment due to the reduction in the use of harsh chemicals and film.

Although digital imaging produces far less radiation, Dr. Bassett and her team will still take necessary precautions to protect their patients from any scatter. These precautionary measures include the use of lead aprons and buffers as well as carefully selecting and diagnosing when x-rays are truly necessary.

Additionally, the use of transillumination technology, which is simply the use of the light spectrum to reveal cavities, allows Dr. Bassett to see cavities with absolutely no radiation and higher accuracy. This is an excellent alternative for people who choose not to take x-rays as well as for a more accurate interpretation of the existing cavities.

How often should digital imaging and dental x-rays be done?

The frequency of digital x-rays is completely dependent on your risk of developing cavities or gum disease and should not be done without considering the risks and benefits. After your initial assessment, Dr. Bassett will recommend a frequency based on your current state of oral health.
